Business formation is an important aspect of estate planning. A business entity (such as a Limited Liability Company or Family Limited Partnership) can be a great way to shield assets for liability purposes while also facilitating the transfer of wealth to other family members. Historically, our work in the business realm involved helping clients form new business entities and designing estate plans to suitably address these businesses interests. Yet, as we worked with more and more people, we realized that forming the business was not enough.
Creating the business for a client and then not providing on-going assistance is a bit like handing a child keys to a car they don't yet know how to drive. Since being a business owner comes with certain "rules of the road" that must be complied with at both the state and federal levels, we knew we needed to develop a better way to serve our business clients. After all, most small businesses do not need a full-scale, in-house legal department, but that doesn't mean they don't need help in some capacity. So, in 2025, we introduced the Business Protection Plan to serve our clients beyond "day one" of the company.
